A heroic dose is 5 or more grams of dried psilocybin mushrooms — a term coined by Terence McKenna, who recommended taking it alone, in darkness, in silence. It is the deep end of the pool, and it is not where anyone should start.
Dose levels at a glance
- Microdose (0.1–0.3g): sub-perceptual — mood and focus, no visuals. This is what our capsules are dosed for.
- Low dose (0.5–1g): light euphoria, enhanced color and music.
- Moderate dose (1–2.5g): the classic experience — visuals, introspection, laughter.
- High dose (2.5–5g): strong visuals, ego softening. Experienced users only.
- Heroic dose (5g+): complete immersion, often ego dissolution.
What a heroic dose feels like
Expect the boundaries of self to blur or dissolve entirely. Time stops behaving. Many people describe profound emotional release, encounters with long-buried memories, and a sense of connection that stays with them for months. Others describe periods of real fear — a heroic dose almost always includes challenging stretches. That is part of why people do it, and exactly why preparation matters.
How to prepare
- Work up to it. Be genuinely comfortable at 3.5g (a standard eighth) before considering more.
- Have a sober sitter. Not optional at this level.
- Clear the calendar — the trip runs 6+ hours, and you'll want the next day off too.
- Set and setting: a safe, familiar space, phone off, no obligations.
- Skip it entirely if you have a personal or family history of psychosis or schizophrenia, or you're on medications that interact (especially lithium).
If you're building toward this, our whole dry shrooms come in exact eighth increments so you always know your dose — and if you’re picking a strain for depth, start with our strain comparison.
