There's no single right way to take magic mushrooms — but there are wrong doses, wrong settings, and wrong days to do it. This guide covers the three decisions that shape every trip: how you take them, how much, and where.
1. Pick your method
- Dried shrooms: the classic. Chew thoroughly. Earthy taste, 30–60 min onset.
- Tea: steep ground shrooms in hot (not boiling) water — gentler on the stomach, slightly faster onset.
- Chocolate: tastes like dessert, pre-measured squares, no prep.
- Gummies: exact doses, pocketable, zero mushroom flavor (torn between formats? see chocolate vs gummies).
- Capsules: built for microdosing — tasteless and precise.
2. Pick your dose
If it's your first time: 1 to 1.5 grams. Seriously. A light trip that leaves you wanting more beats a heavy one you weren't ready for. From there: 2–2.5g for the full classic experience, 3.5g (an eighth) when you know what you're doing. More detail in our dose-levels guide.
3. Set and setting
- Set (your mindset): don't trip angry, anxious or exhausted. Shrooms amplify what you bring.
- Setting: somewhere safe and familiar — home, a trusted friend's place, a quiet park you know. Not a music festival, not the first time.
- People: a sober or experienced friend changes everything if the trip gets heavy.
- Logistics: clear 8 hours. Water nearby. Playlist ready. Phone on do-not-disturb.
If it gets intense
Remember: it's temporary, and it's the mushroom. Change the music, change the room, eat something sweet, breathe slowly. Fighting a trip makes it worse; letting it move through you makes it pass.
