A magic mushroom trip lasts about 4 to 6 hours, with the peak arriving one to three hours after eating. Psilocybin itself clears your body fast — mostly within 24 hours — and standard drug tests don't screen for it.
The trip timeline
- 0–30 min: nothing yet, maybe butterflies. Don't re-dose because you "feel nothing" — that mistake writes a lot of wild stories.
- 30–60 min: onset. Colors sharpen, music deepens, laughter comes easy.
- 1–3 hours: peak. Visuals, introspection, time distortion — the heart of the experience.
- 3–6 hours: the comedown, a gentle glide back. Most people feel warm, reflective, tired-but-good.
- Afterglow: many report elevated mood for a day or two after.
What changes the duration
Dose (bigger = longer), stomach contents (empty = faster and stronger), method (tea and lemon tek hit faster and end sooner; chocolate and gummies behave like eating dried), and personal metabolism. Choosing between edible formats changes the vibe more than the clock — our bars-vs-gummies breakdown explains how.
How long shrooms stay in your system
Psilocybin converts to psilocin and is mostly eliminated within 24 hours. Standard 5- and 10-panel drug tests do not test for psilocybin. Specialized tests can detect it in urine for up to ~a week, but they're rare and expensive. Hair tests can theoretically reach back 90 days but are almost never used for psilocybin.
